xFi Rooms

On the Experience Design team, I helped create the best experience for XFinity xFi mobile app users. One of my major accomplishments is that I designed a completely new feature on xFi called Xfinity Rooms to support users with their smart device management.

Design Goal

Comcast wants to create a holistic experience for customers to connect and manage all of their smart devices on XFinity xFi.

my Solution

XFinity Rooms

A new feature on XFinity xFi dedicated to connect, automate, and manage all of users’ smart devices at once.

Impact

My design concepts enabled users to personalize and connect their smart home in a meaningful and enjoyable way. My exploration on smart rooms/home management shed the light on xFi’s future product direction. xFi app is releasing a new home feature.

step 1: define

Understand how users want to use smart devices on xFi

I began by learning previous research, studying competitors, and interviewing people.

Key insights from research:

  • People want to spend as little time as possible to control their smart devices.

  • Users prefer customization and personalization in terms of manage their smart devices.

  • Comcast xFi has the market advantage of integrating different brand’s smart devices.

step 2: prototype

Design the new feature that matches users’ mental model of managing smart devices

My hypothesis: people control their smart devices based on what rooms those devices are located. Thus, I created “Room Profile” on xFi app, a profile for each room in the household.

I partnered with two UX Researchers to test and validate the idea of Room Profile.

  • Room Profile belongs to the existing “Device” navigation because users associate devices with rooms.

I also improved xFi homepage by adding previews of Rooms. This round of user testing revealed:

  • The new “Overview” homepage exceeded users’ expectations since it provides a snapshot of everything that’s happening in the house.

step 3 overcome challenges

New product needs to answer the device ownerships

There are technical and physical limitations make it challenging to manage the profile. People are mobile, and so do some of the devices.

To solve the mobility problem, I turned my focus to “Routines". By creating customized routines, multiple users can enjoy tailor made routines for the same room.

Final Deliverables

Takeaways

  • Being proactive helped me communicate effectively with cross-functional roles and gained a solid foundation of the work.

  • Got out of the comfort zone and sought for feedbacks from different perspectives as early and frequent as I could.

  • Tackle every problem critically. Having a long-term vision on how the product will manifest in users’ lives helped me be less distracted from making the best decisions.
